Best A Literary History of Persia, Volume I: From the Earliest Era until Firdawsi Review

A Literary History of Persia, Volume I: From the Earliest Times until Firdawsi
Product Feature

Product Description
The classic work on the subject, A Literary History of Persia is still the standard work in the English language on Persia and her literature. It spans four volumes (2,256 pages) and took about twenty-five years to write. Although it concentrates on Persian literature, it also surveys all aspects of Persian culture from Iranian pre-history to the twentieth century. The remarkable freshness and liveliness of Browne’s prose will astonish readers. In addition to being a work of reference it is book which may be read strictly for pleasure. J T P De Bruijn’s new introduction surveys the history, significance and continued value of the work.

The Human Story: Our History, From the Stone Age to Today

The Human Story: Our History, From the Stone Age to Today
Product Feature

Product Description

Has there ever been a history of the world as legible as this?

In The Human Tale, James C. Davis takes us on a journey to ancient era, telltale how peoples of the world matured down and founded cities, subject neighbors, and established religions, and continues over the course of history, when they fought two nearly global wars and journeyed into space.

Davis’s tab is swift and clear, never dull or dry. He lightens it with pungent anecdotes and witty quotes. Although this compact volume may not be hard to pick up, it’s certainly hard to place down.

For model, on the death of Alexander the Fantastic, who in a decade had never lost a single battle, and who had staked out an empire that spanned the entire Near East and Egypt, Davis writes: “When they heard how ill he was, the king’s devoted troops insisted on seeing him. He couldn’t speak, but as his soldiers — every one — filed by in silence, Alexander’s eyes uttered his farewells. He died in June 323 B.C., at the ripe ancient age of thirty-two.”

In akin fashion Davis recounts Russia’s triumph in the space race as it happened on an autumn night in 1957: “A bugle sounded, flames erupted, and with a roar like rolling thunder, Russia’s rocket lifted off. It bore aloft the earth’s first artificial satellite, a shiny sphere the size of a basketball. Its name was Sputnik, meaning ‘companion’ or ‘fellow traveler’ (through space). The watchers shouted, ‘Off. She’s off. Our baby’s off!’ Some danced; others kissed and waved their arms.”

Though we live in an age of many doubts, James C. Davis thinks we humans are advancing. As The Human Tale ends, he concludes, “The world’s still cruel; that’s understood, / But once was worse. So far so excellent.”

The History of Australian Exploration from 1788 to 1888

Best The History of Australian Exploration from 1788 to 1888 Review

The History of Australian Exploration from 1788 to 1888
Product Feature

Product Description
PREFACE.

A complete history of the exploration of Australia will never be written. The tale of the settlement of our continent is necessarily so intermixed with the results of private travels and adventures, that all the historian can do is to follow out the career of the public expeditions, and those of private origin which extended to such a space, and embraced such vital discoveries, as to render the results matters of national history.

That private individuals have done the bulk of the detail work there is no denying; but that work, although every whit as useful to the community as the more brilliant exploits that carried with them the publicity of Government patronage, has not establish the same careful maintenance.

To find the material to write such a history would impose the work of a lifetime, and the co-operation of hundreds of ancient colonists; and, when written, it would inevitably, from the nature of the subject, prove most monotonous conception, and fill, I am worried to reckon, how many volumes. The booklover has but to consider the immense area of country now under pastoral occupation, and to remember that each countless subordinate river and tributary creek was the result of some extended research of the pioneer squatter, to realise this.

Since the hope of finding an inland sea, or main central range, vanished for ever, the explorer cannot hope to learn anything much more exciting or fascinating than country fitted for human habitation. The attributes of the native tribes are very akin throughout. Since the day when Captain Phillip and his small band matured down here and tried to gain the friendship of the aboriginal, no startling difference has been establish in him throughout the continent. As he was when Dampier came to our shores, so is he now in the yet untrodden parts of Australia, and the explorer knows that from him he can only gain but a hazardous and uncertain tale of what lies beyond.

But, in this utter want of knowledge of the country to be explored, where even the physical laws do not assimilate with those of other continents, lies the fantastic charm of Australian exploration. It is the spectacle of one man pitted hostile to the whole force of nature — not the equal struggle of two human antagonists, but the ancient fable of the subtle dwarf and the self-confident giant.

When the battle commenced between Sturt and the interior, he was, as he thought, vanquished, though in reality the victor.

In the history of exploration are to be establish some of the brightest examples of courage and fortitude presented by any record. In the succeeding pages I have tried to bring these episodes prominently to the fore, and bestow upon them the meed of history.

In compiling this book I have had the sympathy of many gentlemen, both in this and the neighbouring colonies, and my best thanks are due to them, especially as, owing to it, I have been able to make the work impeccably authentic, and I trust, a painstakingly reliable work of reference.
